RESUMO

The microbial degradation of polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) resins in rivers and lakes has emerged as a crucial issue in the management of microplastics. This study revealed that as the flow rate decreased longitudinally, ammonia nitrogen (NH4+-N), heavy fraction of organic carbon (HFOC), and small-size microplastics (< 1 mm) gradually accumulated in the deep and downstream estuarine sediments. Based on their surface morphology and carbonyl index, these sediments were identified as the potential hot zone for PE/PP degradation. Within the identified hot zone, concentrations of PE/PP-degrading genes, enzymes, and bacteria were significantly elevated compared to other zones, exhibiting strong intercorrelations. Analysis of niche differences revealed that the accumulation of NH4+-N and HFOC in the hot zone facilitated the synergistic coexistence of key bacteria responsible for PE/PP degradation within biofilms. The findings of this study offer a novel insight and comprehensive understanding of the distribution characteristics and synergistic degradation potential of PE/PP in natural freshwater environments.

The disruption of astrocytic catabolic processes contributes to the impairment of amyloid-ß (Aß) clearance, neuroinflammatory signaling, and the loss of synaptic contacts in late-onset Alzheimer's disease (AD). While it is known that the posttranslational modifications of Aß have significant implications on biophysical properties of the peptides, their consequences for clearance impairment are not well understood. It was previously shown that N-terminally pyroglutamylated Aß3(pE)-42, a significant constituent of amyloid plaques, is efficiently taken up by astrocytes, leading to the release of pro-inflammatory cytokine tumor necrosis factor α and synapse loss. Here we report that Aß3(pE)-42, but not Aß1-42, gradually accumulates within the astrocytic endolysosomal system, disrupting this catabolic pathway and inducing the formation of heteromorphous vacuoles. This accumulation alters lysosomal kinetics, lysosome-dependent calcium signaling, and upregulates the lysosomal stress response. These changes correlate with the upregulation of glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) and increased activity of nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells (NF-κB). Treatment with a lysosomal protease inhibitor, E-64, rescues GFAP upregulation, NF-κB activation, and synapse loss, indicating that abnormal lysosomal protease activity is upstream of pro-inflammatory signaling and related synapse loss. Collectively, our data suggest that Aß3(pE)-42-induced disruption of the astrocytic endolysosomal system leads to cytoplasmic leakage of lysosomal proteases, promoting pro-inflammatory signaling and synapse loss, hallmarks of AD-pathology.

We report on a 20-year-old pregnant woman who tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 and was diagnosed with KILT syndrome, a rare condition that increases the risk of thrombotic events. The patient showed signs of deep vein thrombosis that extended from the bilateral iliac vein to the inferior vena cava (IVC), which was treated with placement of an IVC filter and endovascular thromboaspiration/thrombolysis. The IVC was successfully recanalized; however, during follow-up, thrombotic restenosis occurred at the filter level, requiring filter removal. This case highlights the potential benefits of endovascular thromboaspiration/thrombolysis and IVC filter placement in patients with KILT syndrome presenting with acute thrombotic events.

Metacognition refers to the ability to monitor and control one's cognitive processes, which plays an important role in decision-making throughout the lifespan. It is still debated whether metacognitive abilities decline with age. Neuroimaging evidence suggests that metacognition is served by domain-specific mechanisms. These domains may differentially decline with increasing age. The current investigates whether the error-related negativity (ERN) and the error positivity (Pe) which reflect error detection and error awareness, respectively, differ across perceptual and memory domains in young and older adults. In total, 38 young adults and 37 older adults completed a classic Flanker Task (perceptual) and an adapted memory-based version. No difference in ERN amplitude was found between young and older adults and across domains. Perceptual ERN peaked earlier than Memory ERN. Memory ΔERN was larger than Perceptual ΔERN. Pe was smaller in older adults and ΔPe was larger for perceptual than memory flanker. Memory Pe peaked earlier in young as compared to older adults. Multivariate analyses of whole scalp data supported cross-domain differences. During the task, ERN decreased in young but not in older adults. Memory Pe decreased in young adults but increased in older adults while no significant change in perceptual Pe was found. The study's findings suggest that neural correlates of error monitoring differ across cognitive domains. Moreover, it was shown that error awareness declines in old age but its within-task dynamics vary across cognitive domains. Possible mechanisms underlying metacognition impairments in aging are discussed.

INTRODUCTION: α-Klotho protein has three isoforms: a transmembrane (mKL), a shed- soluble isoform, and a circulating soluble isoform (sKL). mKL is expressed in the kidney and placenta, while sKL is detectable in blood and urine. It is known that α-Klotho levels fluctuate during pregnancy mainly in women with complications such as preeclampsia (PE) and intra-uterine growth restriction (IUGR). METHODS: Forty-nine participants were divided into two groups: healthy and complicated pregnancy (PE, IUGR or both). Tissue samples (2 cm3) from the maternal side, Blood and urine samples were collected during pregnancy and postpartum. Samples were subjected to biochemical (WB), histological (H&E and IHC) staining as well as genetic analysis (qPCR). RESULTS: Blood αKL levels were preserved in both healthy and complicated pregnancies. Significantly lower blood αKL concentrations were found in PE postpartum (PP) compared to levels during pregnancy, and were significantly lower compared with postpartum of a healthy pregnancy. αKL activity was reduced in complicated pregnancies vs. healthy pregnancies. Placen tal mKL levels (ELISA) and expression (WB) were lowered in complicated pregnancies compared with the healthy pregnancies group. Additionally, we found a significant decline in the expression of mKL mRNA in PE/IUGR placentas compared with the healthy group. DISCUSSION: Several studies have focused on the involvement of αKL in normal placentation during pregnancy. Our results suggest lower function of sKL in complicated pregnancy compared with a control, and present differences in placental mKL levels as well as tissue and gene expression between healthy and complicated pregnancy. In light of our results, we conclude that complicated pregnancy is associated with in decline in mKL.

Mulching to conserve moisture has become an important agronomic practice in saline soil cultivation, and the effects of the dual stress of salinity and microplastics on soil microbes are receiving increasing attention. In order to investigate the effect of polyethylene microplastics on the microbial community of salinized soils, this study investigated the effects of different types (chloride and sulphate) and concentrations (weak, medium, and strong) of polyethylene (PE) microplastics (1% and 4% of the dry weight mass of the soil sample) on the soil microbial community by simulating microplastic contamination in salinized soil environments indoors. The results showed that:PE microplastics reduced the diversity and abundance of microbial communities in salinized soils and were more strongly affected by sulphate saline soil treatments. The relative abundance of each group of bacteria was more strongly changed in the sulphate saline soil treatment than in the chloride saline soil treatment. At the phylum level, the relative abundance of Proteobacteria was positively correlated with the abundance of fugitive PE microplastics, whereas the relative abundances of Bacteroidota, Actinobacteriota, and Acidobacteria were negatively correlated with the abundance of fugitive PE microplastics. At the family level, the relative abundances of Flavobacteriaceae, Alcanivoracaceae, Halomonadaceae, and Sphingomonasceae increased with increasing abundance of PE microplastics. The KEGG metabolic pathway prediction showed that the relative abundance of microbial metabolism and genetic information functions were reduced by the presence of PE microplastics, and the inhibition of metabolic functions was stronger in sulphate saline soils than in chloride saline soils, whereas the inhibition of genetic information functions was weaker than that in chloride saline soils. The secondary metabolic pathways of amino acid metabolism, carbohydrate metabolism, and energy metabolism were inhibited. It was hypothesized that the reduction in metabolic functions may have been caused by the reduced relative abundance of the above-mentioned secondary metabolic pathways. This study may provide a theoretical basis for the study of the effects of microplastics and salinization on the soil environment under the dual pollution conditions.

The high prevalence of preeclampsia (PE) is a major cause of maternal and fetal mortality and affects the long-term prognosis of both mother and baby. Termination of pregnancy is currently the only effective treatment for PE, so there is an urgent need for research into its pathogenesis and the development of new therapeutic approaches. The NFκB family of transcription factors has an essential role in inflammation and innate immunity. In this review, we summarize the role of NFκB in normal and preeclampsia pregnancies, the role of NFκB in existing treatment strategies, and potential NFκB treatment strategies.

The lymphoma incidence rate is on the rise, with invasive forms particularly prone to relapse following conventional treatment, posing a significant threat to human life and wellbeing. Numerous studies have shown that traditional Chinese botanical drug medicine offers promising therapeutic benefits for various malignancies, with previous experimental findings indicating that Celastrus orbiculatus extract effectively combats digestive tract tumors. However, its impact on lymphoma remains unexplored. This study aims to investigate the impact and underlying mechanisms of COE on the proliferation and apoptosis of Burkitt lymphoma cells. We diluted COE in RPMI-1640 medium to create various working concentrations and introduced it to human Burkitt lymphoma Raji and Ramos cells. To evaluate cell viability, we used the CCK-8 assay, and we observed morphological changes using HE staining. We also conducted Annexin V-PI and JC-1 staining experiments to assess apoptosis. By combining the cell cycle experiment with the EDU assay, we gained insights into the effects of COE on DNA replication in lymphoma cells. Using Western blotting, we detected alterations in apoptosis-related proteins. In vivo experiments revealed that following COE intervention, tumor volume decreased, survival time was prolonged, spleen size reduced, and the expression of tumor apoptosis-related proteins changed. Our findings indicate that COE effectively inhibits lymphoma cell proliferation and promotes apoptosis by regulating these apoptosis-related proteins.

Compared to Western populations, Chinese and Asians possess distinct genetics, lifestyles, and dietary habits. They tend to have shorter stature, lower Body Mass Index (BMI), and higher body fat percentages than Western populations. The aim of this study was to compare disparities in maternal-fetal outcomes by combining pre-pregnancy BMI and gestational weight gain (GWG) based on distinct US and Chinese guidelines. A total of 2,271 pregnant women who received perinatal care at Fooyin University Hospital from 2016 to 2021 were included. Logistic regression analysis categorized women into twelve groups based on the two criteria to explore the relationships between BMI and GWG, and maternal-fetal outcomes. Among the subjects, only 23.2% and 21.8% women had a normal weight BMI and adequate GWG, based on US and Chinese criteria, respectively. As BMI and GWG increase, the likelihood of developing complications such as gestational diabetes, gestational hypertension or preeclampsia, Cesarean section, and Large for Gestational Age also rises. Conversely, underweight women with excessive GWG exhibited lower risk of preterm birth either by US or Chinese guidelines. Two criteria exhibited similar odds for investigated outcomes, except for gestational hypertension or preeclampsia. Women had more than double the odds of developing gestational hypertension or preeclampsia when using US criteria compared to Chinese criteria. Therefore, it is essential for Asian, especially Chinese women, to be aware of the differences in adverse outcomes such as gestational hypertension or preeclampsia when using US criteria.

Background: Small-bore chest drains are now the most common drains for treating pleural effusion (PE), but knowledge on complications is limited especially in malignant PE and empyema. We aimed to evaluate rate of complications of ultrasound guided small bore chest drains [6-10 French (F)] by PE etiology. Methods: Retrospective cohort study of 484 chest drains inserted in 330 adults in a Swedish department 2018-2020. Rate of complications (blockage, dislocation, infection, or misplacement) and repeat intervention (new drain within 2 weeks or surgery) was analyzed by effusion type (organ failure, parapneumonic, malignant, empyema, other, unknown), age, sex, seniority of radiologist, and bore size using multivariable logistic regression. Results: Most inserted drains (73.3%) were 6 F. The rate of repeat intervention was substantially higher in malignant PE [25.5%; adjusted odds ratio (aOR) 3.3; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.6-6.8] and empyema (56.4%; aOR 11.9; 95% CI: 4.8-29.4) compared to other aetiologies (range, 9.5-17.8%). Surgery as complication occurred in empyema in 23.0% of cases (aOR 10.6; 95% CI: 1.4-79.4). The rate of repeat intervention in simple PE (parapneumonic or due to organ failure) was low (range, 9.5-12.5%). Conclusions: A single small-bore chest drain (6-10 F) was successful in the vast majority of simple PEs, but had high complication rates in empyema with frequent need of additional drains or surgery. These findings support use of larger drains and early consultation with a thoracic surgeon in empyema.

Background: The Nuss procedure is currently the mainstream of pectus excavatum (PE) surgery; however, it is considered to be more difficult for asymmetric cases than for symmetric ones. Sternocostal elevation (SCE), which was performed at our hospital, is a surgical method that determines the extent of resection of the costal cartilage while comparing the left and right balance during surgery; thus, it is highly useful for correcting rib cage with strong asymmetry. Methods: Of the 256 patients who underwent SCE at our hospital between July 2014 and July 2022, 58 (22.7%) with asymmetric PE were retrospectively examined. However, patients with advanced scoliosis having a Cobb angle of 25° or higher were excluded; therefore, 51 (19.9%) patients were analyzed. Two indices and other measurements were evaluated to determine the success of correction for asymmetry using computed tomography (CT). Results: The difference between the left and right thoraxes, the Haller index, and the sternal torsion angle significantly improved. Furthermore, we herein set a new numerical index as an indicator of asymmetry improvement and to be used for a more standard thorax morphology; the difference between the left and right thoraxes/the average of the left and right thoraxes. That new index also significantly improved. Conclusions: SCE is considered a highly useful surgical method for asymmetric PE.

Preeclampsia (PE) is a multiple organ and system disease that seriously threatens the safety of the mother and infant during pregnancy, and has a profound impact on the morbidity and mortality of the mother and new babies. Presently, there are no remedies for cure of PE as to the mechanisms of PE are still unclear, and the only way to eliminate the symptoms is to deliver the placenta. Thus, new therapeutic targets for PE are urgently needed. Approximately 95% of human transcripts are thought to be non-coding RNAs, and the roles of them are to be increasingly recognized of great importance in various biological processes. Circular RNAs (circRNAs) are a class of non-coding RNAs, with no 5' caps and 3' polyadenylated tails, commonly produced by back-splicing of exons. The structure of circRNAs makes them more stable than their counterparts. Increasing evidence shows that circRNAs are involved in the pathogenesis of PE, but the biogenesis, functions, and mechanisms of circRNAs in PE are poorly understood. In the present review, we mainly summarize the biogenesis, functions, and possible mechanisms of circRNAs in the development and progression of PE, as well as opportunities and challenges in the treatment and prevention of PE.

Venous thromboembolism (VTE), comprising deep venous thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE), is a prevalent cardiovascular condition, ranking third globally after myocardial infarction and stroke. The risk of VTE rises with age, posing a growing concern in aging populations. Acute PE, with its high morbidity and mortality, emphasizes the need for early diagnosis and intervention. This review explores prognostic factors for acute PE, categorizing it into low-risk, intermediate-risk, and high-risk based on hemodynamic stability and right ventricular strain. Timely classification is crucial for triage and treatment decisions. In the contemporary landscape, low-risk PE patients are often treated with Direct Oral Anticoagulants (DOACS) and rapidly discharged for outpatient follow-up. Intermediate- and high-risk patients may require advanced therapies, such as systemic thrombolysis, catheter-directed thrombolysis, mechanical thrombectomy, and IVC filter placement. The latter, particularly IVC filters, has witnessed increased usage, with evolving types like retrievable and convertible filters. However, concerns arise regarding complications and the need for timely retrieval. This review delves into the role of IVC filters in acute PE management, addressing their indications, types, complications, and retrieval considerations. The ongoing debate surrounding IVC filter use, especially in patients with less conventional indications, reflects the need for further research and data. Despite complications, recent studies suggest that clinically significant issues are rare, sparking discussions on the appropriate and safe utilization of IVC filters in select PE cases. The review concludes by highlighting current trends, gaps in knowledge, and potential avenues for advancing the role of IVC filters in future acute PE management.

AIM: Hereditary thrombophilia (HT) testing is frequently conducted during the evaluation of patients with pulmonary embolism (PE). However, the utility of routine HT testing in this setting is unclear. We sought to assess the association of HT with risk of recurrent venous thromboembolism (VTE) following first-time PE. METHODS: We conducted a multi-hospital retrospective study. 290 patients with a first-time PE, who had been tested for HT, completed at least 3 months of therapeutic anticoagulation (AC), subsequently discontinued AC, and were followed for at least 36 months thereafter, were included. RESULTS: HT was present in 48 of the 290 included patients (17%). Median follow-up after discontinuing AC was 61 months (interquartile range, 43-79 months). The overall recurrence rate of VTE during follow-up was 58 per 290 (20%). A total of 47 of 242 patients (19%) in the HT-absent group had a recurrent VTE, compared with 11 of 48 (22%) in the HT-present group. There was no significant difference in VTE-free survival between groups on Kaplan-Meier analysis; the hazard ratio (HR) for VTE recurrence for those with HT compared to those without (HR HT-present: HT-absent) was 1.240 (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.614-2.502; p=0.548). On multivariable analysis, HT was not associated with risk of recurrent VTE (HR 1.262; 95% CI 0.640-2.488), and the only variable associated with VTE recurrence was unprovoked PE (HR 2.954; 95% CI 1.64-5.314). CONCLUSIONS: These findings demonstrate that the presence of HT is not associated with the risk of recurrent VTE following first PE, and support limiting the use of HT testing among patients with first PE.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: As reported in the Ancient Chinese Medicinal Books, Ginkgo biloba L. fruit has been used as a traditional Chinese medicine for the treatment asthma and cough or as a disinfectant. Our previous study demonstrated that G. biloba exocarp extract (GBEE), an extract of a traditional Chinese herb, inhibits the formation of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) biofilms. However, GBEE is a crude extract that contains many components, and the underlying mechanisms of purified GBEE fractions extracted with solvents of different polarities are unknown. AIM OF THE STUDY: This study aimed to investigate the different components in GBEE fractions extracted with solvents of different polarities and their antibacterial effects and mechanisms against MRSA and Staphylococcus haemolyticus biofilms both in vitro and in vivo. METHODS: The components in different fractions were detected by high-performance liquid chromatography-high resolution mass spectrometry (HPLC-HRMS). Microbroth dilution assays and time growth curves were used to determine the antibacterial effects of the fractions on 15 clinical bacterial isolates. Crystal violet staining, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were utilized to identify the fractions that affected bacterial biofilm formation. The potential MRSA targets of the GBEE fraction obtained with petroleum ether (PE), denoted GBEE-PE, were screened by transcriptome sequencing, and the gene expression profile was verified by quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR). RESULTS: HPLC-HRMS analysis revealed that the four GBEE fractions (extracted with petroleum ether, ethyl acetate, n-butanol, and water) contained different ginkgo components, and the antibacterial effects decreased as the polarity of the extraction solvent increased. The antibacterial activity of GBEE-PE was greater than that of the GBEE fraction extracted with ethyl acetate (EA). GBEE-PE improved H. illucens survival and reduced MRSA colonization in model mouse organs. Crystal violet staining and SEM and TEM analyses revealed that GBEE-PE inhibited MRSA and S. haemolyticus biofilm formation. Transcriptional analysis revealed that GBEE-PE inhibits MRSA biofilms by altering ion transport, cell wall metabolism and virulence-related gene expression. In addition, the LO2 cell viability and H. illucens toxicity assay data showed that GBEE-PE at 20 mg/kg was nontoxic. CONCLUSION: The GBEE fractions contained different components, and their antibacterial effects decreased with increases in the polarity of the extraction solvent. GBEE-PE limited MRSA growth and biofilm formation by affecting ion transport, cell wall synthesis, and virulence-related pathways. This research provides a more detailed overview of the mechanism by which GBEE-PE inhibits MRSA both in vitro and in vivo and suggests that GBEE-PE is a new prospective antimicrobial with the potential to be used in MRSA therapeutics in the future.

Composite pollution by microplastics and heavy metals poses a potential threat to the soilplant system and has received increasing attention. Plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) have good application potential for the remediation of combined microplastic and heavy metal pollution, but few related studies exist. The present study employed a pot experiment to investigate the effects of inoculation with the PGPB Bacillus sp. SL-413 and Enterobacter sp. VY-1 on sorghum growth and Cd accumulation under conditions of combined cadmium (Cd) and polyethylene (PE) pollution. Cd+PE composite contamination led to a significant reduction in sorghum length and biomass due to increased toxicity. Inoculation with Bacillus sp. SL-413 and Enterobacter sp. VY-1 alleviated the stress caused by Cd+PE complex pollution, and the dry weight of sorghum increased by 25.7% to 46.1% aboveground and by 12.3% to 45.3% belowground. Bacillus sp. SL-413 and Enterobacter sp. VY-1 inoculation increased the Cd content and accumulation in sorghum and improved the phytoremediation efficiency of Cd. The inoculation treatment effectively alleviated the nutrient stress caused by the reduction in soil mineral nutrients due to Cd+PE composite pollution. The composition of the soil bacterial communities was also affected by the Cd, Cd+PE and bacterial inoculation treatments, which affected the diversity of the soil bacterial communities. Network analyses indicated that bacterial inoculation regulated the interaction of rhizospheric microorganisms and increased the stability of soil bacterial communities. The Mantel test showed that the changes in the soil bacterial community and function due to inoculation with Bacillus sp. SL-413 and Enterobacter sp. VY-1 were important factors influencing sorghum growth and Cd remediation efficiency. The results of this study will provide new evidence for the research on joint plantmicrobe remediation of heavy metal and microplastic composite pollution.

Background: Pelvic venous obstruction (PVO), defined as greater than 50% stenosis or occlusion of pelvic veins, is a known risk factor for deep vein thrombosis (DVT). DVT is a known risk factor for chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH), but the prevalence of PVO in CTEPH is unknown. Methods: This cross-sectional study at Temple University's tertiary referral center for Pulmonary Hypertension, Right Heart Failure, and CTEPH sought to identify the presence of PVO in patients with CTEPH who underwent cardiac catheterization, pulmonary angiography, and venography. Results: A total of 193 CTEPH patients were referred for pulmonary angiography, and among these, 148 underwent venography. PVO was identified in 65 (44%) patients. Lower extremity (LE) DVT was associated with PVO (p = 0.004). The severity of pulmonary hypertension was similar with and without PVO (mean pulmonary artery pressure 43.0 ± 10.3 mm Hg vs. 43.8 ± 12.4 mm Hg, p = 0.70), as was the need for pulmonary thromboendarterectomy (69.2% vs. 61.4%, p = 0.32). Conclusions: Pelvic vein obstruction is common and a novel clinical association in patients with CTEPH, particularly in patients with a history of LE DVT. PVO and its role in CTEPH warrants further study, including the potential role of revascularization to mitigate further risk.

Pre-eclampsia (PE) is a hypertension condition that occurs exclusively during pregnancy and has the potential to impact nearly all organ systems. It is estimated to complicate approximately 2-8% of pregnancies worldwide. PE is a prominent medical disorder that poses a significant risk to pregnant mothers and their infants. This review commences by giving the most up-to- date concepts about the pathophysiology of PE. The condition involves atypical infiltration of trophoblast cells into the spiral arteries of the decidua and myometrium, resulting in an insufficient establishment of proper blood flow between the uterus and placenta. The aberrant activation of natural killer (NK) cells in both the peripheral blood and the decidua has been identified as one of the contributing factors to the development of PE. The strong evidence for the genetic etiology of PE is provided by the association between maternal killer cell immunoglobulin-like receptor (KIR) and Human Leukocyte Antigen (HLA-C) in trophoblast cells. Recent observations provide evidence that changes in the expression of anti-angiogenic factors in the placenta are the underlying cause of the clinical symptoms associated with the condition. This review also provides a comprehensive overview of the latest advancements in understanding the underlying causes of PE. It specifically highlights the emergence of new diagnostic biomarkers and their potential implications for therapeutic interventions in managing this medical condition.

BACKGROUND: Preliminary evidence shows promising treatment outcomes at short-term follow-up for intensive posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) treatment, but long-term follow-up studies are sparse. This study is a sequel to a previous pilot study and open trial, set out to investigate treatment outcomes at 12-month follow-up for outpatients completing an 8-day intensive treatment for PTSD. METHODS: All patients were diagnosed with PTSD and had multiple previous psychotherapy attempts (M = 3.1). Patients were assessed at pre-treatment, post-treatment, 3- and 12-month follow-up. Of 35 treated patients, 32 (91.4%) attended the long-term follow-up assessment. The treatment programme combined prolonged exposure therapy, eye movement desensitization and reprocessing, and physical activity. RESULTS: The effect sizes indicated large reductions in symptoms of PTSD, depression, anxiety, interpersonal problems, and well-being. Changes in functioning showed a small-medium effect. Results were stable across the follow-up period. The treatment response rates showed that 46-60% of patients achieved recovery with respect to PTSD symptoms, and that 44-48% no longer met diagnostic criteria for PTSD. CONCLUSIONS: Time-limited and concentrated outpatient treatment for PTSD can yield large and enduring positive outcomes. Controlled trials are needed to establish relative efficacy.
